How firm registration works

A firm's registration and an individual's licence are separate. A licensed architect who forms a company does not thereby have a registered firm, and a registered firm whose responsible professional has let their licence lapse is not covered by that person's past registration.

Choosing between firms

Fit matters more than size. A three-person practice that has designed twenty houses may serve a house better than a large firm whose work is commercial. What matters is whether they have done something like yours, who will actually do the work, and whether you can speak plainly to them. Approach two or three, and treat the first meeting as an interview rather than a sales pitch you are receiving.

Frequently asked questions

Does RIA recommend a firm?
No. We register and license; we do not rank, rate or refer. Any site or person offering an "RIA-approved" shortlist is not doing so with our involvement.
Can I appoint an individual rather than a firm?
Yes, provided they are licensed for the current year. Check them the same way you would check a firm.
Does the register include engineers?
No. Engineers are registered by their own institute.
