What the Institute is and what it does

The Rwanda Institute of Architects registers and licenses the professionals who design Rwanda's buildings, sets the standards they work to, and acts when those standards are not met.

Our mission

Regulating and raising the profession

Since 2012, RIA has regulated, scaled and promoted the core values of architecture in Rwanda, fostering ethical, outstanding practice among architects and allied design professionals.

We provide technical advice, professional development and coaching so that members can meet market needs and shape the rapid urban growth of Rwanda's cities — creating places where people live, learn, work and play.

What the Institute does

Registers and licensesArchitectural professionals and firms, and maintains the public register.
Sets standardsPublishes the standards of conduct and practice members work to.
Handles complaintsConsiders complaints against members and acts on registration where required.
Requires CPDRequires and accredits continuing professional development.
Advises and representsAdvises on the regulation of the built environment and represents the profession.
Represents Rwanda abroadRepresents Rwandan architects in the region and internationally.

Our standards

Ethics and integrity, in writing

Internal regulations and bylaws set out RIA's rules, procedures and the responsibilities of members and groups within the Institute.

The code of ethics guides members' conduct and applies to every membership category, without exception.

International standing

RIA is a member of the International Union of Architects, the Africa Union of Architects, the Commonwealth Association of Architects and the East Africa Institute of Architects, whose mutual recognition arrangement lets architects registered in one partner state practise in another.
